Ghassen Aouinti: Scaling IT skills through LPI’s certifications
I am Ghassen Aouinti, an IT engineer who spent many years managing my information system with traditional tools and then using software with monolithic architectures, sometimes quite complicated to implement.
Then, one day, LPI Maghreb launched a partnership with my employer, the Tunisian Ministry of Defense, to train and certify its engineers.
I didn't hesitate for a moment to go for my first LPIC-1 certification, which I obtained with an excellent score. In the following years, I was eager to discover the exciting world of Linux system administration, and I achieved my second level of LPI's professional certification, LPIC-2.
With LPIC-2 under my belt, I wanted to push myself even further; I wanted to learn more and look for ways to be more productive and efficient in my daily tasks.
I was able to find solutions to all these needs with my third LPI Certification, DevOps Tools Engineer.
In my opinion, the DevOps Tools Engineer certification is an essential toolbox for any software engineer who wants to boost their career.
I am very satisfied and happy with my career path because, through learning, I have been able to change my professional life.
Currently, I work as an independent consultant and instructor in LPIC-1, LPIC2, and DevOps Tools Engineer with several institutions and engineering schools in Tunisia and France; I support companies that want to migrate from their current architecture to a new approach that focuses on communication, collaboration, integration, and automation to improve the workflow between developers and system administrators.
Last but not least, I contribute to the evolution of the DevOps and Linux community in my country by participating in "Education" days as a coach to demonstrate how easy it is to use these approaches and “software bricks” to optimize processes and decrease delays.
Sonia Ben Othmann: LPI Maghreb
Sonia Ben Othmann represents the Linux Professional Institute (LPI) in Northern Africa. In 2012, her work led to the program with the Tunisian government that Ghassen took advantage of. If you want to know more about Sonia's work and how she supports the growth of women and girls in FOSS, please read this blog posting.
Your LPI story
With more than 200,000 certification holders, stories as Ghassen’s one can be repeated endlessly. If you are the protagonist of such a story–if an LPI’s certification has improved your career, your life, or your community through education and other related projects–we invite you to contact your regional representative to have that story collected. This post is part of the #LPIStory series.

How Adam Futureproofed His Career with Linux Professional Institute
According to Foote Partners report, ‘IT Skills and Certification Index’, there’s double-digit growth in bonuses paid to LPI certified candidates. So, is it the promise of a lucrative career, or is there even more to being certified with LPI?
We asked Adam, from Washington, about his experience of getting into open source, taking the exams and how this contributed to his current success.
“After spending most of my early life learning and then teaching Spanish, Japanese and English as a foreign language, I realised that there wasn’t much progression in this profession – so decided to take a different path.
“I’ve always been interested in technology trends and saw potential in learning a programming language, so began learning about Linux in around 2007. I really felt that, if I was going to establish a new career in software development, that I had to understand and be able to work with Linux, first and foremost. Since I lacked any industry experience I decided to take the LPIC-1 and Linux Essentials certifications.
“I had to upskill to prepare for the exam, and I began by using Linux Academy and their training tools; I read lots of “Intro to Linux” books and study guides; I went to meetups and networking events to talk about Linux with people who really knew their stuff. To support my learnings with practical application, I set-up and ran my own Linux server, and started my own professional blog, which I still run to this day.
“The exams were actually much tougher and more thorough than I had expected, but that shows it’s something worthwhile. I’d recommend dedicating at least an hour a day to prepare for the exam.“It took me approximately a year to complete all three exams (LPIC-1 [101 and 102] and Linux Essentials) but within a week of getting my first Linux certification, I got a job as a Support Technician, at Silicon Mechanics – where I currently work, but now as a Senior Support Technician.
My day-to-day work usually involves my using Linux in some way – so the certifications have helped me enormously. I’d definitely recommend it as a good foundation for anyone interested in an IT career – in fact, I have recommended it to colleagues who have also gone on to take the LPI exams.
For my own next step, LPIC-2 is on my list: I’m always looking to learn more about my industry and the LPIC-2 exam will allow me to take my knowledge to that next level – ultimately, enabling me to better support my customers.
Technology is always evolving, which makes it a fascinating industry to work in. We also now have an automation and DevOps team at Silicon Mechanics, and I’ll soon be joining up with that team and working with them on a number of projects. Once I take my LPIC-2 exam, I’m looking forward to taking the LPIC-OT: DevOps certification, so I can upskill in that area too.”

Linux Professional Institute Launches DevOps Tools Certification
Following intensive development work with the DevOps and open source communities, the Linux Professional Institute (LPI) is officially releasing the new Linux Professional Institute DevOps Tools Engineer certificate on Monday, October 16, 2017. This release follows the successful worldwide beta testing over the previous months. With this certification, LPI is helping to deal with the growing importance of DevOps competencies in the ICT industry and the need to verify individual skills of its practitioners for potential employers.
Read More: LPIC-OT Exam 701: DevOps Tools Engineer
The Linux Professional Institute DevOps Tools Engineer is a globally available and accessible credential which will assist in closing the gap in the supply landscape and adds a significant component to LPI’s open source skills certification portfolio. "Considering that most popular DevOps tools are open source, it's a logical step that the certification we have developed demonstrates the ability to use these technologies efficiently and well," explains G Matthew Rice, Executive Director of LPI.
DevOps competencies are increasingly in demand and the reasons are obvious. "Using these tools creates a tremendous benefit for both software developers and administrators," says Fabian Thorns, Director of Certification Development of LPI. On the one hand, DevOps eases the job of administrators by enabling them to handle recurring tasks automatically. On the other hand, DevOps give developers the opportunity to take over tasks for which they would have previously needed an administrator. This dynamic creates new freedoms and efficiencies that benefit everyone, including employers.
The Linux Professional Institute DevOps Tools Engineer certification is ideal for anyone who is technically involved in the development or delivery of software. There is no prerequisite credential for taking the Linux Professional Institute DevOps Tools Engineer exam, however, it is strongly recommended that a candidate already have a strong background and certification in system administration or software development. Fabian Thorns: "We recommend an existing certification in the respective primary field. This can just as well be Linux administration or Java software development."More information on LPI's DevOps exam is available at https://www.lpi.org/devops. The learning objectives are described at https://wiki.lpi.org/wiki/LPIC-OT_DevOps_Tools_Engineer_Objectives_V1.

Open source careers: How Mehdi Hamidi became a DevOps Specialist
We are gratified to start with the story of Mehdi, a SysAdmin and DevOps Engineer from Iran.
Pentium 133, DevOps, and everything in between
I’m Mehdi Hamidi, a DevOps Specialist with 5 years of work experience in System Administration and DevOps. I believe my current position grew from of a change in direction I took early in my education. And I think I have been lucky in my life. So, let me tell you my “techie life” story…
In the beginning
When I was 13, my aunt had a Pentium 133 computer and I was curious about how a computer works. I almost immediately started writing code, before having my own computer. I had read a QBasic book and I was writing the code on… paper. My first memorable achievement, which I’m still incredibly proud of, was a Qbasic Code to calculate prime numbers up to 1000.
It was six months before I could visit my aunt again. The code worked fine.
I am very happy to share my story about how LPI has changed my life and helped me in pursuing my goals.
Linux and Open Source: many kernels ago
The first Linux environment that I was involved with was RedHat Linux 7.2 in high school. I loved writing code in C and testing it on Linux. At that time I started learning the Linux commands.
At the university, courses required mostly Microsoft environments and C# language; however, I always kept an eye on Linux.
The path seemed clear: to get my Master of Science, send out CVs, start work. But halfway through my postgrad program, I found out that it wasn’t what I expected. I needed something more practical, something that I could do. I left the university. But I wasn’t quitting the computer field: I was looking for a way to get more involved in something that was not teached in universities, something related to my technical goals, by which I could become a prominent expert.
The Linux Community and me
I immediately started looking for a community of developers and SysAdmins in Iran. I started attending the Tehran LUG meeting and the other events such as the Ubuntu Release Parties.
Then I opened my Twitter account. Twitter had an undeniable impact on allowing me to connect with my technical friends as well as industry experts.
It seemed that It was for a big change. I quit my routine job and went for learning PHP, as I wanted my applications web-based. The problem is: I genuinely hated PHP! It seemed the end of the line. But I was wrong.
I hadn’t realized that having a good knowledge of Linux is a great key for aspiring to System Administrator positions. I heard of LPI for the first time at an Ubuntu Release Party. Meanwhile, a SysAdmin friend told me a small company was developing its private cloud. I wasn’t sure what it was about, but it was something Linux related, and that was enough. ;-)
After two months studying Linux and virtualization, I started the job. Meanwhile, I bought a Raspberry Pi and built up a home server, just to keep me (more) busy. I implemented a Wordpress blog with Apache on that Raspberry Pi with a single core CPU. Just imagine, what would happen with all of the LAMP stack on a single SD Card…
This was the beginning of my learning about web servers, logs, optimization. I implemented an NFS server for home file sharing. I started synching my Phone Contacts with CardDav Server on Raspberry Pi. Thank you, RaspberryPi, for making a junior SysAdmin of me!
The LPI Certification
And then LPI came into play. I wanted to give more consistency to my CV through a worldwide acknowledged certification. That’s why I attended an LPI exam.
I signed up for preparation classes for LPIC-1. The classes were dramatically important to help me navigate through the topics and objectives of the exam.
I started to read the reference books, which contain the majority of exam objectives, and took notes from the most important parts, which I referred to on the next iteration of studying. The most significant insight I got during the studying phase, when I was involved in many important details, was the many gaps in my knowledge. Study made me aware of my weaknesses and lack of knowledge, which I wouldn’t have found out otherwise. The details matter, because they distinguish between a beginner and experienced system administrator. LPIC-1 made me involved in the details, and that is the most significant effect it had on my techie life.
Although the exam was tougher than I expected, I passed and I became an LPIC-1 certified professional.
Me, a DevOps, today
My approach to my career involves continuous learning. I implemented Zabbix monitoring for the company I was working in. The need for agile development and integration made me go in Docker and Jenkins direction. Nginx. SaltStack. And then microservices and Kubernetes.
I applied for LPIC-2 preparation classes, two years ago, in order to apply for more professional work positions. I want to dare: again, and more. It’s time to prove myself going for LPIC-2!
