  • The file order is incorrect. The destination file must be mentioned before the command to ensure redirection.
  • The command sed did not match anything in that file therefore the output is empty.

  • Redirection for shell commands do not work using the > character. It only works using the | character instead.

Alex Muñoz Carmona: From LPI certificate to system administration

Alex Muñoz Carmona did his compulsory studies at INS Guinovarda in Piera, Catalonia. After finishing school, he took the LPI exam that qualified him to receive the Linux Essentials certificate, which he gives credit for helping him win his first professional position as system administrator at the SEAT automobile company. The following interview explains the tools Alex uses in his work and the value of LPI certification.

Please describe your education before you got your job at SEAT.cer

The computer training cycle at INS Guinovarda was a great experience, thanks to the teachers we had. At the beginning, the center did not have the material we needed, but with a lot of effort on the part of the teachers, they managed to give us the necessary equipment. We worked only with Linux, to be able to enter the job market well prepared as sysadmins. It was the best experience of my life.

What do you do as system administrator at SEAT? What does SEAT use GNU/Linux for? What are the major tools you work with?

At SEAT, I manage their Active Directory for all their users, groups, and group policy objects (GPOs). But I use Linux to run calculations to automate the processing of incidents at logging level 3. For process automation, I create automation scripts using a number of Linux commands in the Windows PowerShell console to facilitate the work of technicians, such as copying massive files, deploying applications to all the computers in the park (data center), and monitoring the attributes of the entire AD to perform backups. The tools I use the most are PowerShell, to create customer-specific applications, and the open source LDAP, which interoperates with Active Directory.

Why did you decide to get the Linux Essentials certificate? What did you feel you were lacking in your education or qualifications before you got the certificate?

There were two reasons I decided to get the Linux Essentials certificate. First, Linux was the operating system that my professor Xavi used in studies, so I came out of the program quite prepared to obtain the certificate. Second, Linux makes development and deployment easy for the projects I need to do.

What role did computers play for you when you were growing up? Did you have friends or people at school who used Linux or other advanced computer tools?

My first contact with a computer came when I was five years old, and I soon realized that it was the future and that I could turn my hobby into my job. I had a friend whose father was a computer scientist, and he helped us with any inconveniences we encountered. Moreover, he used Linux a lot to set up servers.

What did you think of your formal education in school? Did it help prepare you for what you are doing at work now?

I learned a lot thanks to my professor, Xavi, who was very oriented to the world of work, both technically and professionally. My training helped me learn how to hold a meeting, how to present a project to managers, and above all how to act decisively in the face of any problem.

How did you prepare for Linux Essentials? Do you have advice for other people who want to get an LPI certification?

My preparation was simply to use Linux environments daily for two years. To pass the certificate exam, you must look for a lot of information and put it into practice. Use Linux as your main operating system to learn how to deal with all the facets that it requires.

Was the Linux Essentials test like other tests you have taken? How was it different from tests in school?

The exam was very similar to the ones carried out in my school, because the professor guided us a lot toward the world of Linux.

What are your plans for more education and professional work?

AM: My plans are to get LPIC-1 certification, learning along the way to use all that knowledge with other operating systems that integrate Linux-related tools.

Ghassen Aouinti: Scaling IT skills through LPI’s certifications

I am Ghassen Aouinti, an IT engineer who spent many years managing my information system with traditional tools and then using software with monolithic architectures, sometimes quite complicated to implement.

Then, one day, LPI Maghreb launched a partnership with my employer, the Tunisian Ministry of Defense, to train and certify its engineers.

I didn't hesitate for a moment to go for my first LPIC-1 certification, which I obtained with an excellent score. In the following years, I was eager to discover the exciting world of Linux system administration, and I achieved my second level of  LPI's professional certification, LPIC-2.

With LPIC-2 under my belt, I wanted to push myself even further; I wanted to learn more and look for ways to be more productive and efficient in my daily tasks.

I was able to find solutions to all these needs with my third LPI Certification, DevOps Tools Engineer.

In my opinion, the DevOps Tools Engineer certification is an essential toolbox for any software engineer who wants to boost their career.

I am very satisfied and happy with my career path because, through learning, I have been able to change my professional life.

Currently, I work as an independent consultant and instructor in LPIC-1, LPIC2, and DevOps Tools Engineer with several institutions and engineering schools in Tunisia and France; I support companies that want to migrate from their current architecture to a new approach that focuses on communication, collaboration, integration, and automation to improve the workflow between developers and system administrators.

Last but not least, I contribute to the evolution of the DevOps and Linux community in my country by participating in "Education" days as a coach to demonstrate how easy it is to use these approaches and “software bricks”  to optimize processes and decrease delays.

2. Could you differentiate between shell and bash scripting?

Bash stands for “Bourne Again Shell”, and is a better version of the original Bourne shell (sh). A shell script can be used in any shell, but Bash scripts may only be used in a Bash environment.

3. Could you explain the purpose of skeleton directories?

A skeleton directory is a directory used by popular hosting programs such as cPanel or Plesk to store default files and folders. To find this directory, log in to your server via WHM (Web Host Manager) in your browser. Type ‘skell’ into the search box(a), and this will sort the menu options for you.

4. How does the Shebang work in Linux?

The shebang —the first line of the script file— tells the kernel which program to use to run the program in a file. A shebang is any one-line comment that has the characters 

5. How would you define SUID permissions?

The SUID bit is called Set owner User ID. This bit is a special permission that applies to scripts or applications. When the SUID bit is set, when the command is run, its effective UID becomes that of the owner of the file instead of the user running it.

6. How would you define the X11 architecture?

The X Window System (aka X11) is a network protocol for displaying graphics on a variety of different hardware platforms. It has been implemented by a number of different vendors for a wide variety of hardware platforms. In Ubuntu, we ship X11 as implemented by the X.org project on Linux.

7. Is Wayland better than X11?

Wayland is more lightweight than X, as it avoids most of X11’s legacy baggage. One of the primary reasons for X11’s complexity is that its function has changed over the years. As a result, today, X11 widely serves as “a really terrible” communications protocol between the clients and the window managers.

8. How would you explain what Xorg does in Linux?

Xorg is an open-source X11-based desktop infrastructure. It is a piece of software that allows you to interact with your hardware and run graphical programs and applications. Xorg is also fully network-aware, meaning that you can run a program on one computer while actually viewing it on another.

9. What assistive technologies are available in Fedora and Ubuntu versions of Linux?

Ubuntu comes with a number of accessibility tools pre-installed and activated. The screen reader, magnifier, and on-screen keyboard can be activated using the Gnome Assistive Technology Preferences panel, found under System>Preferences in the Applications menu.

10. Could you explain a User Group in the database?

User groups are essentially database items that are used as a representation of a collection of user accounts. They’re designed to make it easier to manage the privileges and permissions of multiple user accounts at once. Typically, you create a user group to represent a collection of user accounts or sometimes even a department within your organization.

11. What is the difference between a job and a cron job?

By creating Kubernetes Jobs, transient pods can be created that perform specific tasks. A CronJob does the same thing, but it runs the tasks according to a defined schedule.

12. What do you mean by localization?

The process of localizing a product, application, or document refers to modifying its content to meet the linguistic, cultural, geographical, and other requirements of a specific market (a locale).

13. What is the difference between localization and Internationalisation?

Internationalization is the design of software so it can be adapted to various languages and regions. Whereas, localization is the actual adaptation of internationalized software for a specific region or language by translating text and adding locale-specific components.

14. How would you define the NTP Chrony?

Chrony is a free software package that allows computers to synchronize their clocks over the network, using the Network Time Protocol (NTP). It’s a replacement for the ntpd, which is a reference implementation of the NTP. Chrony runs on Unix-like operating systems (including Linux and macOS) and is released under version 2 of the GNU General Public License.

15. Can Chrony and NTP run together?

Yes, one can have multiple instances of Chrony on a computer at once. One can operate as an NTP client to synchronize the system clock and another as a server for other computers.

16. Could you highlight the functions of Syslog?

The System Logging Protocol (Syslog) is a standardized way for network devices to send out notifications in a standard message format. Syslog was designed to make it easy to monitor network devices. A Syslog agent, typically installed on the device, can send out notification messages under a wide range of specific conditions, such as when certain types of errors are spotted or when certain events happen.

17. What is meant by the Syslog configuration?

The Syslog daemon (Syslogd) provides a central location for logging messages generated by applications running on your Unix or Linux system. Its configuration file, /etc/Syslog.conf defines logging rules and output destinations for error messages, authorization violation messages, and trace data. Logging rules are defined using a facility name and a priority code.

18. What do you know about the CUPS command?

CUPS, a utility suite for managing printers, provides several commands to set up printers and make those printers accessible to systems on the network. In addition, CUPS supports several printer-specific options that enable you to control printer configuration.

19. What are the differences between IPv6 and IPv4 security?

Although IPv6 is designed with built-in encryption capabilities and packet integrity checking, IPv4 can be configured to offer similar security features, so there is essentially no difference between the two when it comes to Internet Protocol security (IPsec).

20. What are the basic TCP IP parameters?

21. Could you tell me what do Net-Tools include?

22. What is the importance of the DNS servers?

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a server that is devoted to matching site names, such as example.com, to their corresponding Internet Protocol or IP addresses. The DNS server contains a database including the public IP addresses along with their corresponding domain names.

23. Could you tell me some of the safest DNS servers?

24. What are the advantages of shadow passwords over traditional password systems?

Shadow passwords store encrypted passwords in a location that is not readily accessible. Shadow passwords provide a number of benefits, including the ability to store encrypted passwords in /etc/shadow, instead of the unencrypted passwords used in most systems. 

25. What is the difference between shadow and Passwd?

The /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files have different pieces of data. Passwd contains the users’ public information (UID, full name, home directory), while shadow contains the hashed password along with the password expiry date.

26. Could you define TCP wrappers and how they work?

TCP Wrapper allows users to control who may access their computers. The program monitors incoming packets and checks to see if any external entity is attempting to connect. If a connection attempt is detected, TCP Wrapper examines whether the external entity is authorized. If it is authorized for connection, access is permitted; if not, access is denied. The program can be customized to suit the individual user or network needs.

27. How would you define GPG configuration?

GPG.conf is the configuration file that GPGreads on startup. This file may contain any valid long option, but the leading two dashes must not be entered and the option may not be abbreviated. This default name may be changed on the command line (GPG-option –options). You should backup this file.

28. How do GPG encryption and decryption work?

To send someone a secret message, you encrypt it using their public key. They then decrypt the message using their private key. The encrypted message and the short key are sent to the recipient who decrypts them using their own private key.

29. Is GPG encryption secure?

GPG is very secure, as long as you choose a strong enough passphrase. In practice, your passphrase will almost always be the weakest link. This instructs GPG to use a password hashing method that is slow enough to make brute-force guessing impractical, but only if you enter your passphrase on every operation.

30. Could you elaborate on the SSH port tunneling?

SSH tunneling makes it possible to transport arbitrary data over an encrypted SSH connection. It can be used to forward connections made to a port on your own desktop to a remote machine via a secure channel.

In short, choices for specialization provided by LPI certifications are getting more varied. This is progress that reflects an enormous amount of work at LPI on developing its training programs.

The road to security

After I obtained the LPIC-3 Virtualization and High Availability certification, confirming my skills in those topics, I started studying for the LPIC-3 Security Exam. Working in a Security Operations Center, I considered this certification a reasonable step due to the extensive coverage of the certification topics.

But it is not always easy to understand how to start the preparation for such a complex exam. Let's navigate through it together.

The first thing to do is to go to check the exam Objectives. You will find the following macro-topics:

◉ Encryption

◉ Host security

◉ Access control

◉ Network Security

Each of these topics contains an increasingly detailed list of the covered Objective.

Those who already work in the field of cyber security or at least in the ICT security context, have already addressed some of these topics, but now need to acquire a Linux-based point of view about the topics. At this point, your modus operandi should follow two straightforward steps:

◉ Search for a bibliography of up-to-date information

◉ Implement a virtual laboratory.

Among some great books that help cover most of the exam topics, I would like to mention the following:

◉ Practical Linux Security Cookbook - Second Edition

◉ Mastering Linux Security and Hardening - Second Edition

◉ SELinux System Administration - Third Edition

Well, yes, I know: I have brought to your attention a book that is all (!!!) about SELinux. In addition to being an essential part of the exam and therefore of the security area, SELinux is one of the main obstacles that could complicate work for those who do not face the topic with the right attitude and knowledge.

The other books cover the topics you need to know to pass the exam and help you approach system administration in general from a much more security-oriented perspective.

Once you have grabbed those manuals, you can build a virtual laboratory that can help you test and deepen your knowledge of all the topics to be addressed, step by step. You just need a PC and a few virtual machines.

Given the exam’s structure, it’s a good idea to create at least two virtual instances: for example, one with CentOS and the other one with Ubuntu or Debian.

Among the various topics, I believe that the following should be treated with particular attention:

◉ User management and authentication

◉ Certificates, PKI, and the related protocols (SSL, TLS)

◉ Encrypting DNS

◉ Package filtering

Having the LPIC-2 certification puts you in the perfect position to scale up to the next level. Ideally, a working experience with IT security of at least three years will help you navigate the broad complexity of the exam.

The People Behind the Learning Portal: Marco Colombo, Learning Materials Author and Translator

The Linux Professional Institute (LPI) Learning Portal brings you cost-free teaching materials for teachers and students developed by Linux Professional Institute. Materials are written and translated into many different languages by members of an international community.

With this post, we get acquainted with Marco Colombo, an LPI certified professional who started his journey of developing LPI-related learning books years ago and is now part of the Learning Portal Team.

Marco, what is your academic and professional background?

I have a degree in Telecommunications Engineering, and I am currently working as a network administrator in an organization operating in higher education. I have always been a lover of technology and Linux, and I love to stay up to date, especially in the open source field. I do believe that in life you never stop learning and that you must always give the best of yourself, loving what you do.

When and how did you decide to use your skill in developing learning materials?

Immediately after earning the LPIC-1 certification.

The idea of collaborating with LPI in writing completely free educational material was undoubtedly a great way to put into practice what I learned during my certification journey, while allowing me to further hone my Linux skills. It's "Learn by Doing", quite literally!

While on my LPIC-1 certification journey, I started creating a series of exercises that could help me learn Linux. I decided to redesign the exercises into a series of questions and answers, perfectly matching the actual LPI exams. All that work became two, let’s call them "simulation books" for the 101-500 and 102-500 LPI exams. The books had quite a great success.

My vision behind them was to create educational material that could help anyone become an LPIC-1 certified professional. Each book consists of 250 questions and answers divided into 4 practice exams—simulating the actual exam—and 1 assessment test.

All the questions are explained step by step, so the reader can fully understand the general background to which each question refers. Now the books LPIC-1 101-500 Practice Exams and LPIC-1 102-500 Practice Exams are part of the official LPI Learning Materials too: Thank you, LPI!

What is your contribution, so far, to the Learning Portal, and what's next for you in this project?

Working on the Learning Portal, I have designed lessons for the Linux Essentials, LPIC-1, BSD Specialist, and Web Development certifications.

In the future, I would also like to contribute to the translation of the Learning Materials into Italian. The LPI Learning Portal is indeed a fascinating and engaging project.

Being a certified professional and a learning material writer makes you aware of the two sides of the coin: From this particular point of view, what is your advice to people studying for their LPI Exams?

My advice is: “practice, practice, practice!”

Of course you need to know, but you must make skills out of that knowledge: hence, you need to practice a lot. Because once you earn your Certification, you will have to face the actual work environment, and you need to be ready for it. Just stuffing in concepts is entirely useless, so: practice, practice, practice!

And how do you advise teachers and, more broadly, people involved in the use and even the production of Linux and open source learning material?

As I said, the LPI Learning Portal is an exciting project: I take this opportunity to invite teachers and Linux and lovers of open source to come forward and collaborate in the drafting of educational material that can help others. If each of us makes our knowledge available, the community will benefit a lot, in addition to empowering the community's individuals.

The LPI Learning Portal is a community, as you say: what is your experience so far, what tools and features do you use in the process? What can you tell us about the workflow? And what "opensourceness" can you recognize in a project about education?

The experience within the community is just brilliant. Each person who decides to collaborate is entrusted with a specific activity based on abilities and availability.
